If you're looking to add some greenery to your room then Snake plant is a must option.
It has been a popular houseplant for decades as it requires low light , little care and little water and in turn it provides you with clean air and oxygen.
The commonly known Snake plant is scientificially known as Dracaena trifasciata and it is also known as Mother-in-law's tongue or Saint George's sword. It's leaves are dark green with light green-gray cross banding and it may reach upto a height of 2 metres.
Firstly, they were cultivated in China , it was believed that eight gods blessed this plant with long life, prosperity , beauty, art, poetry, health, intelligence and strength.
For beginners it can be a perfect choice as it is a low maintenance plant which will look beautiful and purify the air too..Being almost indestructible it can be kept in almost dark corners or either in bright light, but they generally prefer low light conditions and slightly acidic to alkaline soil. Make ssure that the soil is dry before watering again. Over watering can lead to rotting .During winters, reduce the watering to monthly or whenever the soil is dry to touch.
Propagation of the Snake plant :
1.It can be done through cutting and then putting the plant into water for rooting purpose.
2. From the new shoots emerging from the soil , this method generally shows faster results than from the cuttings.
Toxicity : Generally considered to be relatively safe but they're mildly toxic if consumed .
Their leaves contain a poison (saponins) which are mildly toxic to dogs and cats and lead to gastrointestinal upset if consumed.
