APRAJITA
Aprajita (Clitoria ternatea) is commonly known as blue pea, butterfly pea or Darwin pea. The flowers of the vine were imagined to have the shape of human female genitals, hence the latin name 'Clitoria'.
It is said to be the favourite flower of goddess durga. It usually blooms in puja season and used in durga puja. It comes in a beautiful variety of vivid blue and white flowers.
Maintenance :
It is a low maintenance vine or creeper, outdoor flowering perennial requires bright direct Sunlight. To grow a healthy plant, make sure they receive enough amount of sunlight. And generally they do not need any fertilizer.
Watering : Soil should be moist during the growing season.Water the plant when the soil starts to dry.
For promoting branching pinch the growing tops once a month.
Uses :
1. Used as a food colorant.
2.Flowers are used in making tea as it is full of antioxidants and prevents premature aging.
3. Used in traditional medicine, it stands out as a curative herb to improve memory.
4. Used as a natural dye.
5. Grown as an ornamental plant.
Propagation of Aprajita : Can be done through seeds or cuttings.
From seeds :soak the seeds in luke warm water for 24 hours then sow the seeds in a pot with soil covering them and keep the pot in ample amount of sunlight. The seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks.
From cuttings : Cuttings can be taken from a growing healthy tip. Atleast 4 inch long stem is required, remove leaves from the base of the cuttings and plant in a moist soil or potting mix.
Pest protection: Over watering can attract pests to the plant. Avoid over watering as it may cause root rot. And if they are attacked by pests spray Neem oil or mild soap solution.
